Etienne Charry got his start fronting the French pop band Oui Oui,
with director Michel Gondry on drums. In 1999, Kindercore brought his
solo debut, 36 Erreurs, to American audiences for the first time. The
album, appropriately enough, contains thirty-six brief bursts of
playful genius, some songs coming across as half-minute sound
experiments with others proving to be fully-fledged pop perfection. At
his live shows, the similarities between Charry and former bandmate
Gondry shine through, as a quirky robot backing band and a
finger-puppet drummer accompany him.
